The os sacrum connects the spinal column to the pelvic ring and serves as a hinge. Sacral fractures are a diverse set of fractures that can occur in young individuals as a result of a car collision. It can also occure as a result of fall from height. The diagnosis should be made by evaluating particular features during the clinical presentation, with a computed tomography (CT) scan remaining the investigation of choice. Sacral fractures can be treated surgically or non-operatively. Rest and pain reduction therapy are the mainstays of non-operative treatment.

Classification of such fractures is done on the basis following factors

  • The energy of trauma sustained
  • Orientation of the fracture lines
  • Location of fracture

Diagnosis methods for Sacral Fractures :

  • Clinical Diagnosis is done by taking into consideration buttock pain, bruising, swelling and laceration over the sacral area, perineal and genitalia sensibility, sphincter tone malfunction
  • Radiological Diagnosis is done using plane radiograph. In order to improve X-ray sensitivity, inlet and outlet views could be merged with the usual AP view. If X-Ray does not show any fracture and pain persists then, CT scan or MRI can be advised.
There are two types of surgical treatments :

  • Posterior pelvic fixation techniques
  • Lumbopelvic fixation techniques
